4D Design and Illustration

For the final project within the multi-dimensional module this semester we had to create a series of Gifs to represent film tropes.
This was the most daunting project so far for me as I have never done any animation and am not confident with photoshop or procreate. I began by researching some common film tropes for some inspiration. I found that a lot of them seemed to occur in horror films, like the ominous toy doll coming to life, and in romantic comedies, when the two main characters reach for the same object and lock eyes.

These are the initial notes I made when brainstorming ideas for my gifs. I wanted to create some horror film trope gifs as I thought these were some of the most interesting and exciting, and I also love horror films. I also that romantic films had a lot of good tropes that everyone would be familiar with and be fun to draw.

For my first gif I looked at the trope of petals falling from flowers when a sad event has happened in a romantic film. I think the most well known example of this trope is in Beauty and the Beast, where the petals fall from a wilting rose as the 'Beast' runs out of time to reverse his curse. This is the film I was inspired by for this gif. I drew these flowers in fine liner as the basis of my gif to then animate on Photoshop.
